West people are likely to see, whereas East people are likely to be!
According to the Ray's blog, he think that personal spaces are quite different from cultural differences. Then what are the biggest cultural differences between the east and west? Experiments in psychology have a indicated that the east have a outsider's prospective, whereas the west have a insider's prospective. In other words, west poeple are likely to see, but east people are likely to be. For instance, the east have choices arleadly made or prepared. However the west have choosings individual.
I have read about this argument about the difference between American perception and Japanese perception. Apparently, Americans focus more on a central object in a photo or painting while the Japanese focus more on the background. They also conducted tests using an Eye-Tracker, which is a machine that monitors eye movement, and found that the Japanese peoples' eyes tended to focus more on the background than American peoples' eyes. I used to work with this machine when I was a research assistant at The University of Illinois at Chicago. Interesting stuff...although I am not sure I quite believe how they link this information to cultural differences.
